Robert Smith
Robert Smith is the Founder and CEO of SHADOWCAT, and a leading authority in the development of bespoke support vessels for the superyacht industry. With more than three decades of experience spanning commercial shipping, engineering, and yacht program development, he brings a rare combination of operational insight and technical expertise to vessel design and delivery.
Smith began his career at sea, rising to achieve an unlimited Class I Chief Engineer license and serving on large commercial and cruise vessels before transitioning into the superyacht sector. He went on to hold senior engineering roles aboard some of the world’s most notable yachts, including Le Grand Bleu, Tatoosh, and White Cloud, building a deep understanding of how complex vessels operate in real-world conditions.
In 2009, he founded Yacht Consultancy and Technical Services (YCTS Ltd), providing technical advisory, project management, and build oversight for high-value yacht programs. His work as a client representative on major builds, including the 87-metre Lonian, further established his reputation for integrating advanced engineering solutions into modern yacht design.
Recognizing a gap in the market for purpose-built support vessels, Smith founded SHADOWCAT in 2018. Under his leadership, the company pioneered a new category of high-capability shadow vessels, combining commercial-grade engineering with yacht-level design and operational flexibility. Today, SHADOWCAT is widely regarded as a category leader, with award-winning vessels such as Hodor and Wayfinder setting new benchmarks for multi-vessel yacht programs.
Smith’s approach is defined by a systems-level view of yacht operations, focusing on expanding capability, efficiency, and real-world usability. His work continues to shape how owners, shipyards, and designers think about vessel architecture, pushing the industry toward more integrated and performance-driven solutions.
