18–20 Months to SHADOWCAT: A New Approach to the Companion Vessel

For owners contemplating a sophisticated new-build program, time is increasingly part of the equation. A mothership may require years of design, engineering and construction before the owner ever steps aboard.

The SHADOWCAT Foundation Series offers another way to begin.

Built around proven naval architecture, mature engineering and the operating experience of the existing SHADOWCAT fleet, the Foundation Series provides three defined starting configurations and an accelerated pathway to delivery of approximately 18–20 months from contract, subject to production slot availability.

That creates an interesting possibility:

The SHADOWCAT doesn’t have to follow the mothership. It could arrive first.

ONE FOUNDATION. THREE MISSIONS.

The Foundation Series begins with a proven platform, then allows owners to select the configuration that most closely aligns with how they intend to operate.

BASECAMP prioritizes adventure and carrying capacity. Without a dedicated helicopter hangar, more volume can be allocated to larger tenders, equipment and additional staff or guests, while retaining a certified H160 landing deck.

WAYPOINT balances aviation, tenders and versatility. A blade-fold helicopter hangar provides aircraft protection for longer voyages while preserving significant capacity for tenders, accommodation and flexible mission spaces.

ALTITUDE places aviation at the center of the program, with a full helicopter hangar supporting roll-in/roll-out operations and maintenance alongside expansive lifestyle, wellness and entertainment spaces.

START OPERATING WHILE THE MOTHERSHIP IS STILL BUILDING

The accelerated Foundation Series timeline changes more than delivery. It changes how an owner can approach the entire new-build program.

Rather than waiting several years for the mothership before assembling the operational infrastructure around it, an owner could begin cruising, exploring and building experience aboard the SHADOWCAT first. This allows the owner’s preferences to evolve through experience rather than assumption.

There may also be opportunities to explore charter use during the period before mothership delivery, creating productive use of the asset while the remainder of the program is under construction.

By the time the mothership arrives, the SHADOWCAT can already be operational, crewed and proven.

WHAT SHOULD ACTUALLY GO ON THE MOTHERSHIP?

We believe the companion vessel conversation should happen early in the design process. This prevents owners from making any compromises that would arise, if the mothership’s fundamental decisions have already been made.

This doesn’t mean every owner needs a companion vessel. It means every owner embarking on a sophisticated new-build should understand what a companion vessel could change before the mothership brief is locked in.

Tender storage, helicopter operations, specialist crew, equipment, fuel, workshops and technical spaces all compete for valuable real estate aboard a yacht.

If those requirements are automatically designed into the mothership first, the owner may sacrifice guest space, privacy, design freedom or flexibility to accommodate operational functions that could live more effectively elsewhere.

The better question is:

What does the owner want the entire program to be capable of?

PLAN THE PROGRAM, NOT JUST THE YACHT

When the mothership and SHADOWCAT are considered together from the beginning, advisors can determine where each function belongs rather than trying to fit every requirement aboard a single vessel.

• Will the owner fly frequently?

• Carry increasingly large tenders?

• Dive or explore remote destinations?

• Travel with specialist staff?

• Add equipment as interests evolve?

• Want greater separation between guest experience and operations?

Those questions influence much more than the SHADOWCAT. They can fundamentally change the design brief for the mothership itself,  by allowing SHADOWCAT to focus on capability, aviation, tenders, equipment and operations.

HAVE THE CONVERSATION EARLY

An owner no longer has to think of a SHADOWCAT simply as something that might be added after the mothership is complete. With an accelerated delivery pathway, it can become the first operational piece of the program. The companion-vessel conversation therefore shouldn’t begin when the mothership runs out of space.

It should begin when the owner starts defining what they want their life on the water to make possible.
